The Connection Between Inflammation and Aging
My doctor, Dr. Shara Posner explains that chronic inflammation can lead to various health issues, especially as we age. As women age, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, the decrease in estrogen levels can initiate a cycle of inflammation, as the body struggles to repair tissues effectively.
Strategies to Mitigate Inflammation
Dr. Posner shared several strategies to combat inflammation, which can be particularly beneficial for women in their menopausal years:
1. Collagen Supplementation
Dr. Shara is in favor of collagen supplementation, especially for those who may not consume enough through their diet. BUT, she cautioned against mixing collagen with caffeine, as studies suggest that caffeine may hinder collagen efficacy, i.e. "Caffeine inhibited collagen biosynthesis in a dose-dependent manner. Caffeine significantly inhibited the enzyme activity."
Tip: don't consume collagen and caffeinated coffee, tea or soda together!
2. Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes, particularly proteolytic enzymes like bromelain, trypsin, and chymotrypsin can help digest damaged proteins in inflamed tissues, thereby accelerating the healing process. Dr. Shara advised taking these enzymes between meals for optimal anti-inflammatory effectiveness. Of course you can continue to take this relatively simple and natural supplement with meals to stoke your digestive fire.
3. NAD+ Activators
The conversation also touched on the role of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) in cellular energy production and its potential benefits for brain function and mood stabilization. Dr. Posner highlighted the importance of NAD+ activators, which can help the body produce its own NAD+, thus supporting overall health and mitigating some symptoms associated with aging.
NAD+ - I use both Ion Layer patches (intermittently) and this liquid form ("Rho") on rotation.
They are expensive, so I requested discounts for us!!
Ion Layer is currently $150 off use code ONAIRWITHELLA

4. Homeopathic Remedy: Arnica
Dr. Shara also discussed the benefits of homeopathic remedies like Arnica, which can be used topically and orally to reduce inflammation and promote healing. This remedy is particularly useful for swelling/bruises and muscle soreness.
See Arnica gel and arnica pellets
5. GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic), are typically used for weight loss, but are being shown to also help regulate insulin sensitivity and manage symptoms related to menopause. Dr. Shara is learning more about how micro-dosing these medications could provide benefits beyond weight loss, such as improved metabolic health and reduced brain fog.
